How to Perform an SMC Reset

If your computer is not working properly, sometimes an SMC Reset will fix the issue. Here are the steps to performing an SMC Reset.


It's important to know which model of MacBook Air you have, as the steps to perform an SMC Reset are different depending on the model. Which Model MacBook Air Do I Have?


A1466 MacBook Airs (received 2018-2019)

  1. Turn off your MacBook Air. If the computer is not shutting down on its own, hold the power button down for 5 seconds until it fully turns off.
  2. Plug the computer into a charger.
  3. Hold Control + Option + Shift + Power at the same time for 10 seconds. Look at the image below to see where these keys are on the keyboard.
  4. Turn the computer back on by pressing the power button normally.


A2179 MacBook Airs (received 2020)

  1. Turn off your MacBook Air. If the computer is not shutting down on its own, hold the power button down for 5 seconds until it fully turns off.
  2. Plug the computer into a charger.
  3. Hold Left Control + Left Option + Right Shift at the same time for 7 seconds. Then keep holding these keys and also hold the Power button for 7 more seconds. Look at the image below to see where these keys are on the keyboard.
  4. Turn the computer back on by pressing the power button normally.


A2337 MacBook Airs (received 2021)

It is not possible to perform an SMC Reset on this model of MacBook Air. Please email support@trinityes.org for further assistance if you have this model of MacBook Air and are told to perform an SMC Reset.
