How to Set Up 2-Step Verification on Your Trinity Google Account

Modified on Wed, 11 Aug, 2021 at 11:36 AM

Starting in the 2021-2022 school year, 2-Step Verification (AKA two-factor authentication) will be required for all faculty and staff on their Trinity Google accounts. With 2-Step Verification, after you log into your Trinity Google account using your username and password, you will also need to confirm your login on a separate physical device, most likely your smartphone. This provides extra security for your account, preventing it from being hijacked if someone figures out your account's password.

If you do not want to use your phone for 2-Step Verification, then use your RingCentral virtual phone number instead.

Setting Up 2-Step Verification

  1. Go to your Google account settings by clicking on this link: Google Account Settings

  2. Click on the "Security" tab on the left.

  3. Scroll down to the Signing in to Google section, and click on "2-Step Verification".

  4. Click on "Get Started". You'll then need to enter your Trinity Google account password.

  5. There are several different methods of 2-Step Verification you can use. If you are logged into your Trinity Google account on your phone, Google Prompts will be the default option ("Use your phone as your second step to sign in"). Otherwise, receiving a text message will be the default option ("Let's set up your phone"). Follow the steps for the option that was provided for you.

Google Prompts (Use your phone as your second step to sign in)

  1. You will see a list of devices that can receive prompts. Click "Continue" to confirm this device list.

  2. A prompt might be sent to your phone. If it is, accept this prompt on your phone to continue.

  3. You'll then need to add a phone number as a backup option. We recommend using your Trinity-issued phone number. Once you've added the number, click "Send".

  4. A text message or phone call will be sent to your phone. Enter the code you received, then click "Next".

  5. Click "Turn On". 2-Step Verification will then be enabled on your account.

Receiving Codes via Text Message (Let's set up your phone)

  1. Enter your phone number, and choose whether you want to get your codes via a text message or a phone call. We recommend using your Trinity-issued phone number, but you can also use your regular phone number. Then click "Next".

  2. A text message or phone call will be sent to your phone. Enter the code you received, then click "Next".

  3. Click "Turn On". 2-Step Verification will then be enabled on your account.
