Display Density

You can change how densely displayed your emails are in Gmail. Click on the settings gear icon, then choose Display Density. You can choose from the following:

  • Default/Comfortable
    • Less dense, adds whitespace
    • Shortcut links to attachments and documents below each email
  • Compact
    • Removes whitespace
    • Smaller text

Integrated Calendar

Your Google Calendar is available across Gmail and Google Drive through the side panel on the right. It's easy to quickly reference your calendar while writing documents or emails, and you can view different days.

Preview Panes

You can enable Preview Panes to get a horizontal or vertical preview split on your emails. Click on the settings gear icon, then choose "Settings". Click on the "Advanced" tab, then find the Preview Pane section and enable it.

Scheduling Emails

Schedule emails for the next day so people don't know you stayed up all night working on something! When writing an email, click the up arrow icon on the right side of the Send button. It will pop up the option to Schedule send the email.

Search and Filter

Sometimes you might want to filter certain emails that you don't want in your inbox. Filters are based on searches. Start with a search first and see if it returns the results you want, then create a filter from that search.

Click on the down arrow icon on the right side of the Gmail search bar to show search options.

From here, enter the search terms you want to create a filter for, then select "Create filter".

From here, you can create a label for the filter, then choose the attributes you want the filter to have. When you are finished, click "Create filter".

Filter Messages Like This

A quick way to create filters or delete emails without typing is to use the "Filter messages like this" button. It pre-fills the from email address into the search box, allowing you to make a filter more quickly. When an email you want to filter is open, click the three vertical dots icon on the top-right, then choose "Filter messages like this".

Label Colors

Labels you make for filters will appear on the left side of your screen, below the Inbox, Starred, Sent, etc. tabs. You can change the colors of these labels by clicking on the three vertical dots icon to the right of the label, then choosing Label Colors.

Seeing All Filters

You can see all of your filters by clicking on the setting gear icon, then choosing "Settings". From there, go to the "Filters and Blocked Addresses" tab.
