What is Poll Everywhere?
Poll Everywhere lets you create multiple choice, free response, true/false, word cloud and text walls, clickable images, and discourse poll questions that can be delivered to any device that can send a text or through a web interface. Polls can be customized with colors, fonts, graphics, layouts, spacing, and messaging. Results can be displayed in a web browser, web site, a PowerPoint or Keynote slideshow, or (most likely) a Google Slides presentation.
Teachers can create a feedback poll or ask questions. Students respond in various ways and teachers see the results in real-time.
Ideas for Classroom Use
- Find out what students think about an upcoming, all-important classroom decision, such as whether to put off a quiz/test.
- Check for understanding on a topic
- Ask students what they think might happen in the future (predict what will happen next in the book or with an experiment)
- Find where students stand in regards to important issues.
- “Who do you think will become the next president of the United States” (US Government class)
- If a substance is strongly acidic, what is the pH range on a scale of 1-14? (Chemistry class)
- In Mary Shelly’s novel Frankenstein, do you think the monster is born evil or good? (English Literature class)
Using Poll Everywhere
Poll Everywhere is automatically installed on all faculty members' Trinity-issued MacBooks. To use Poll Everywhere, first open a Google Slide presentation. On the top bar, there will be an option called "Poll Everywhere" between "Add-ons" and "Help".
Click it, then select New -> Activity.
If it's your first time using Poll Everywhere, you'll need to sign in with your Trinity Google account. Click "Sign in with Google" to do that. Once logged in, if you see an "Activity not found" warning, simply click on the "View activities" button to get to the main menu. From there, click on the "New activity" button on the top right.
There are a variety of different activities to choose from, including multiple choice, true/false, word cloud, open-ended, etc. Pick the activity you want, then once it loads, click "Edit" to configure the activity how you want to. While editing the activity, you can toggle if students can change their answers, and limit the number of times a student can respond. Click "Save" when you are done.
You can adjust the visuals of the poll by clicking on "Visual settings". When you are finished configuring your poll, click "Insert slides", then choose if you just want to insert the interactive poll (Default), or if you want an introductory slide and a conclusion slide before and after the poll (Engagement). Click "Insert slides" again, and the slide will be inserted into your Google Slides presentation. You can then close the Poll Everywhere window.
The poll will have a link at the top that tells students where to go respond to the poll. When your presentation is being presented and the slide containing the poll is reached, the poll will become active, and students who have gone to the website will be able to respond. The responses will be displayed and updated on the presentation in real time.
